Bill Viola & the art of contemplation: a HeartEdge church & culture seminar

St Cuthbert's is currently showing Bill Viola's 'Three Women' and this seminar has been organised as the final event that the church is hosting relating to the installation.

The seminar will focus on:

  • approaches to curating exhibitions in churches (Revd Matthew Askey, Chaplain Southwell Minster);

  • Bill Viola's church-located installations (Laura Moffatt, Director Art & Christianity); and

  • art as contemplative or meditative practice (Alexander de Cadenet, artist, and Revd Jonathan Evens, Associate Vicar St Martin-in-the-Fields).

  • 2.10pm Bill Viola in church: a review of Viola's church-located installations - Laura Moffatt

  • 2.50pm Curating in church: experiences of exhibiting contemporary art - Revd Matthew Askey

  • 3.30pm Afternoon tea and viewing of 'Three Women'

  • 4.00pm The art of contemplation: art as contemplative practice - Revd Jonathan Evens

  • 4.40pm In a harmonious zone: producing art in a meditative state - Alexander de Cadenet

  • 5.20pm Closing thoughts - Revd Peter Sutton
